Maligathanne
Situated atop a rock that is the tallest point in the Colombo district (Western Province), Maligatenne is said to have been a seat of power simply for the reason that the sacred tooth relic having been safeguarded here.
A dagoba and a lily pond is situated at the top with splendid views in every angle. A 100 year old image of Lord Buddha and an amazing mushroom-like cave. That todate easily offers shelter to over 300 people. It is said that this cave has a mere 4x3Ft circumference at the ground.
Varana
Picturesquely situated across a paddy field atop a rocky outcrop, Varana’s history dates back to around 2300 years. King Devanampiyatissa is said to have constructed this 3-tiered or ‘malu’ which was renovated by King Valagamba.
This complex has 41 images of lord Buddha, within the 12 caves together with cave paintings that date back to 600 years. Local material used for painting were herbs, roots, flowers and minerals. The pahala maluwa has 2 images while the meda viharaya has 32 images with the uda maluwa having the balance 7 images.
Pilikuththuwa
King Devanampiyatissa is said to be the 1st King to have visited/ constructed Pilikuttuwa, some 2300 ago. King Valagamba during his period of reign renovated and maintained this temple 1100 odd years ago.
Images of Lord Buddha, with an excellent reclining image and paintings that date back to 1600 years can be found here, in a relatively calm and serene setting.
